Varicose Veins

If you experience pain, discomfort, swelling, itching, discoloration or restless legs, you may have varicose veins.

Varicose veins can become quite enlarged and in some people they can be seen as raised lumps in the thigh, legs and calves.

When they become enlarged, they can be seen through the skin and may develop a purple-blue hue. If the skin over the varicose vein blisters, occasionally bleeding occurs from the thin walled vein. This can be quite dramatic and upsetting.

More commonly, however, once the size of the vein reaches 5 mm (a little bigger than 3/16th of an inch), varicose veins cause itching, burning or an ache in the affected leg. These symptoms become worse when a person is standing for several hours during the day.

If the condition is left untreated, the skin overlying the vein hardens and color changes of the skin can happen. This is followed by swelling of the leg. The final and most dangerous step of varicose veins is the development of an ulcer (an open sore) of the skin.

Even in these latter stages, there is significant benefit to be gained by ablation of the varicose vein.
